This is a showcase of work by students in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, who graduated from 2020 to 2022.

Klara Gryglicka

Illustration - BA (Hons)

Hello! My name is Klara and I’m a Polish illustrator from Warsaw currently based in Cambridge, UK. I enjoy exploring different media
and my works range from digital illustration and design, to printmaking, gouache and ceramics. My main focus is working with colour and atmosphere and I aim to balance those qualities in each project.

During the second year of my degree I was Highly Commended in the V&A Illustration Awards for my “My Summer” - a visual diary that explored childhood memories through moments spent at my grandparents’ house.

Even though I’m interested in various areas of illustration - product packaging, publishing & editorial - I hope that my enthusiasm for drawing comes through in each of the projects. Working in my sketchbooks is an important part of my practice and quick colourful sketches often informed my final projects such as the “Magical animals” editorial and the Charles Darwin jigsaw packaging. I enjoyed working with printmaking, specifically etching and aquatint, as it allowed me to focus on contrast and atmosphere for my book illustrations.

More about this course

My Summer. The illustrations focus on childhood memories connected to my grandparents’ house and the summers spent in a small Polish town called Lubartów. My main aim was to create an atmosphere of stillness and warmth, focusing on nostalgia that adds an element of magical realism to scenes from everyday life.

“Magical Creatures” editorial. Redesigning a spread from “Breathe” magazine about celebrations and festivals around the world that focus on animals.

Lisbon Sketchbooks. Spreads from our course trip to Lisbon including two spreads from the Mercado de Santa Clara and a gouache colour palette.

Still Life. Digital illustration based on a prompt provided by @stillherestilllife on Instagram. This was a personal project created as an experimentation with digital art, specifically looking at capturing interesting textures, shapes and colours.

Kombucha libre. Kom-bucha libre is a play on words combining freestyle wrestling (lucha libre) with organic kombucha. I was inspired by the colourful masks and costumes of luchadores (masked wrestlers) and wanted to create a packaging design that would encapsulate the figures in a playful way. My main focus was to explore the potential of design through colours, shapes and illustrated characters.

Etching & Aquatint. The prints on each side illustrate two fragments from “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez while the central image presents the final scene from “The Six Swans” by Grimm Brothers. I created the illustration by etching the images and adding layers of aquatint.

Darwin Puzzle Box. A gouache painting of Charles Darwin surrounded by plants and animals included in his research that I’ve turned into a jigsaw puzzle packaging.
