Kelsey Buttery

Illustration - BA (Hons)

Hello, I’m Kelsey, a 2022 graduating illustrator from Cambridge School of Art, based in Norfolk.

Themes that run through my work relate to my love of nature and animals. For one of my final projects, I chose to produce a book cover for the Penguin Design Awards. I selected Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty. For the final artwork, I experimented with separating my work into layers and printed it using a Risograph machine with just 2 colours.

For my second brief, I decided to produce a Leporello (concertina book) based on the theme of the circus. It follows the sequence of a circus, with animals as the main focus (no animals were harmed in the making!).

As with most of my work, it is created using traditional materials such as gouache, coloured pencil, inks and markers. I very much enjoy experimenting and working with colour, I often use my sketchbook to plan out colour palettes, compositions as well as drawing from life.
