“I’m still getting better.” (Kamaru Usman)
I am of Nigerian descent and was born in Co. Limerick, Ireland in 2000 and moved to the United Kingdom in 2016. I have been here ever since, based mainly in Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Here I present my newest project: BUSTER.
BUSTER as a brand stands for fun, creativity, and boundless opportunity — but it’s also a world of its own. BUSTER and his friends live above the clouds and have endless horizons ahead of them.
BUSTER is able to communicate with people of every demographic, regardless of age, gender, and sexuality. Heavily influenced by the cultural impact of brands like A Bathing Ape, Baby Milo, and Sanrio (most prominently Hello Kitty), the BUSTER brand aspires to the same level of international recognition — a cast of characters applied to a wide range of products, designed to inspire, to capture hearts, and to expand horizons.
The BUSTER brand is also important to me as a designer as it is an accumulation of everything I have learned about design and branding up to this point. UFC fighter Kamaru Usman’s mantra “I’m still getting better” has been one I have adopted and applied to my work because even though I feel this is my most complete work as a graphic designer to date, I still have the desire to continue improving every day.
I am strongly influenced by artists like Tyler the creator, Nigo, Pharrell and Virgil Abloh — artists who have been able to transfer their singular art, be it graphic design, music, or dance, and expand into multimedia brands that touch and affect every field of the arts.
At university, I have learned how to organise myself, manage my time, and plan efficiently for an expansive branding project such as this one — as well as how to develop customer personas. This way I can develop products in response to a realistic customer type, rather than designing what I may think will stick with people solely from my own tastes and understanding.
During my studies, I have expanded my design skills and am developed my knowledge of Adobe programs like Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. I am now better able to understand and produce an effective design for the web, and have also gained experience working in traditional graphic design media like letterpress.
