Graphic Design - BA (Hons)
I have just finished my third year as a Graphic Design student at ARU.
I am an aspiring hand lettering and calligraphy artist. My final major project focuses on mental health in the public eye. I explored how I could use hand-rendered type as a form of communication. I was inspired by Stefan Kunz, who is a famous hand lettering artist.
The project used powerful affirmations, digitally rendered, to help the viewer question and overcome any unwanted feelings. It focuses on quotations that are directly related to certain mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression.
The project was inspired by issues created by the current global pandemic. As the lockdown were announced the number of patients suffering with mental health issues increased. I want to create a piece that focused on self-help and positive thinking. As we move out of lockdown and into a sense of normality, I wanted affirmations to be displayed in a larger format such as the side of buildings or on buses.
After university, I plan to continue with hand-lettering, calligraphy and typography; as I believe that even in a non-commercial setting it brightens up even the dullest of areas.
