Chelsea Man

Graphic Design - BA (Hons)

Creativity, innovation, and imagination is what I believe visual communication to be all about.

My name is Chelsea Hoi Kai (pronounced hoy-kay) and I'm a graphic designer with a passion for creating original and fun designs that challenges the everyday norms. Born in London from a Chinese background, I am fortunate to be surrounded and inspired by the cultures and heritage around me. My vision is to create work that is bold, unexpected, and meaningful.

I have over three years of experience with Adobe Creative Cloud including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and XD. My latest endeavours within graphic design was the Watersprite Film Festival 2022 as the Head of Creative Design. As a film enthusiast, I was fortunate to be able to work in this field whilst pursing my interest in publication design. This experience has greatly influenced my work by learning how to develop visual art with a fresh outlook.

When I'm not creating, I'm most likely exploring the great outdoors or reading about fictional worlds with a nice cup of hot chocolate.

Let’s get straight to it. Going out alone. It’s awkward. It’s embarrassing. But the question is why? Why is enjoying your own company seen as such a bad thing, especially when you want to do it?

Party of One is a vehicle for change to encourage self-awareness and empowerment in youths. My final major project is dedicated to disrupting the stigma around solo consumer culture and encourage people to embrace singularity. Research shows that people are often uncomfortable going out alone due to how they think they are perceived by others. Attached to this stigma are frequent negative connotations such as lonely or strange. In fact, more than half of 16-24 year olds worry about what others think of them. This can play a large part in diminishing confidence and esteem for oneself. As a result, I have designed a collection of simple yet impactful visual graphics as part of the Party of One manifesto publication to break down these stereotypes. This manifesto discusses the debate around the issue; the values and aims inside this publication have been created to initiate change and a shift in societal attitudes.

Going out alone. It’s not awkward. It’s not embarrassing. It’s empowering.
