Marcia Motty

Drama - BA (Hons)

My name is Marcia Motty, and I am a stage actress. I usually say that I didn't choose to do theatre, theatre was born in me. I've always had a hard time finding my voice and putting my thoughts into words. For me, using a character facilitates and makes things flow in a very natural way. Speaking in front of an audience is a powerful experience that reminds me of the reality of miracles.

There is no question in my mind that theatre was the means by which my life was transformed. I haven't really done much since then. I've been involved in theatre for 15 years, but I never felt like a professional at any moment. Theatre always inspires me to learn more and to pay close attention to talented individuals from whom I may learn a lot. I'll never be able to quit learning as an actress. There will always be more to discover. Being an actor has no limits, it’s like to constantly feel an endless hunger for learning. In 2019, I decided to leave my home and family behind in favour of expanding my education. Now I am in England, where I came to complete my bachelor's degree in Drama.

I had spent my entire life pursuing acting as a career, but this time I decided to take a chance on something completely new. When faced with the opportunity to create a devised peace I utilised the available resources at my disposal to produce a tangible creation that held personal significance. Daily, my social circle primarily consists of individuals affiliated with my academic institution and my professional organisation.

The decision was made to utilise the distinctive attributes of the project participants in order to construct the individual characters of each actor. Thus, was born the project “Don’t Let Samba Die”. A theatrical play where all the characters have a common dream but completely different life stories and paths.

Working as a director on this project has enlightened me on how to collaborate with my stage colleagues and the significance of mutual support. However, as a perfectionist, I also needed to learn that it's okay when things don't go according to plan. Having the ability to utilise our resources and transform them into something unique demonstrates resilience. In addition to being a director, I was also a writer, choreographer, and actress. Which made this effort even more special. Creating something from beginning with colleagues taught me significantly more than I expected.
