MA Children's Book Illustration

I have previously studied at Norwich School of Art and Design, and Chelsea College of Art. Since then I have worked as a freelance illustrator, mainly in the realm of children’s educational publishing, for clients such as Scholastic, Pearson Education and Evans Publishing Group.

I live in Norfolk.

The MA Children’s Book Illustration has been a wonderful opportunity to develop my practice. I particularly enjoyed the Observational Drawing module as I love sketching from life. I even like drawing in the rain!

My ideas for picturebooks come from my childhood memories and the experiences of my own children. I work with pencils, acrylic paints and inks.

My final projects feature journeys. The first is about a visit to the seaside and is inspired by John Masefield's poem Sea Fever which expresses a longing to return to the sea, all the more poignant during recent periods of lockdown.  Confined to our own homes for most of the last year, I also found inspiration in Xavier de Maistre's Journey Around My Room published in 1794. In my version a child journeys around their bedroom.

I am excited to create images with which a child can imaginatively interact during that precious time spent absorbing a picturebook.
