Camila Amorim

Drama and Film Studies - BA (Hons)

My name is Camila Amorim and my chosen degree is Drama and Film studies.

The fact is, I never had an answer when people asked “So what do you actually want to do?”. I started this journey knowing that I loved acting as well as producing films, but really lost when it came to a specific position, which actually gave me the freedom to jump between both courses and truly experiment creatively.

Now, three years later, I know what I want to do. I am a filmmaker and I want to direct films. I am confident in my artistic voice, I can animate, I can direct, edit and operate all kinds of equipment. However, I am aware that I still have a lot to learn, but that’s not a breaking point - on the contrary.

The work I have most enjoyed doing so far is experimental, based on concepts like: what if one of the actors represented an object? I have come to the conclusion that to be alone and free of set ideas isn’t necessarily bad. When you’re adrift, you’re also in discovery. Like a true Portuguese, I want to set sail - but as a filmmaker. I want to explore different concepts inspired by directors such as Pedro Almodovar, Wes Anderson, Lars Von Trier, Miguel Gomes and Ingmar Bergman. I want to explore humanity, questioning and appreciating what we are.

2021 “Creative Stimulus” - This is the practical element of my Major Project. It approaches the theme of creative stimulus and whether they’re helpful in the creative studio or not.

2021 “Picasso Impression” – This is my most recent project, as a group, the aim was to give our personal, artistic impression of two Picasso paintings. The concept was generated by both of us, but the impressions were directed by each individually, as you can see in the credits. Mine is the first piece.

2021 “(Dis)Connected” – A group project exploring the body onscreen. This was a group project, my responsibilities were: film and sound director, actress and video editor.

2020 “DUDA” - Portrait film. This short film was the process I most enjoyed so far, apart from animation. Because, since it was non-fictional, the challenge was to work with the person I’m capturing (Duda) and find the right moments and angles that most appropriately convey her image without disrupting her too much so that it wouldn’t turn into an act. This generated the possibility of me knowing her through the lens in a very gentle and detailed manner, which I really enjoyed looking back.

2020 “Vínculo” – Animation. This film is experimental, but mostly about the relationship between woman and man, the viewer and the spectacle. It was entirely produced by me except the music. I used Dragon Frame to animate and Premier Pro to edit the final result.
