Annabel Owen
Photography - BA (Hons)
Through her photography, Annabel is working digitally in the genre of street photography specifically documenting commuters on The London Underground. Through portraiture, she captures narratives of the banal journeys the commuters experience every day. Part of this banality is represented in the repetitive design of the carriages and the station platforms.
As a commuter, she wants to capture the aspects of these journeys that go unnoticed; everyone is present in the carriage, but absent, thinking of other things as they journey through London together.
As an observer, she captures the one moment of these daily commutes. Focusing on the busy train lines of the Bakerloo, Central and Northern lines, she picks out the red, yellow and blue colours which are often visible in the train carriage interiors and the platforms, as signifiers of the London Underground itself. She draws artistic influence from Saul Leiter and Walker Evan with their approaches to street photography.
Her key achievements to date are the completion of a Higher National Diploma in photography at Hertford Regional College; continuing to study for her third year at Anglia Ruskin University; and throughout college, as a class, curating exhibitions at Hertford Theatre, displaying both their own work and others artists’ pieces.
