Lauren Boyden

Illustration - BA (Hons)

Hello, my name is Lauren and I’m an artist from Cambridgeshire. I specialise in highly detailed and grotesque work that explores anatomy and animal structure. My work is eerie and visceral; however, I often approach my work from a scientific perspective, sharing similarities with vintage medical illustration. My strengths include working with different mediums, for example, graphite, ink, acrylics, oil, etc.

I have a strong preference for working in limited colour palettes particularly black and white which suits the nature of my work. My greatest influences are Edward Gorey and Junji Ito, both notable for their black and white pen work and dark themes. I’m also inspired by the art of the metal subculture, in particular album art and band merchandise, which I would like to design in future.

One of my other major interests is creature design and monsters, which I’m exploring in my final project. I’m designing creatures that inhabit the fens where I grew up and continue to draw inspiration from the flat, barren, sometimes haunting landscape.
